Dr. Michelle Dern is a general pediatrician with a special interest in the care of internationally adopted children. She is located at El Camino Pediatrics in Encinitas , California .


Children adopted from foreign orphanages are at increased risk for many health problems. These include infectious diseases, toxic exposures, nutritional deficiencies, developmental delays, and emotional disorders. Dr. Dern has experience with these issues, and can assist families throughout the adoption process.



Available services for families in San Diego County include:


Pre-adoption evaluation and consultation:

  • Review of medical records, photos and videos with office consultation. Advice by e-mail or phone during travel.



Post-adoption medical evaluation and screening:

  • Comprehensive physical examination, developmental assessment, and screening lab tests should be done within two weeks of arrival.



Referrals:

  • As needed for early intervention developmental services, psychological counseling, or medical specialists.



Primary care follow-up:

  • Routine well and sick care
